Weather Stations
Weather stations experience some of the most severe climatic extremes, but their measurement and monitoring equipment must withstand the challenges. Reliability is one of the key factors in designing equipment for installation into some of the most far-flung locations on earth. For example, Antarctic base stations and other remote facilities often have to wait out seasonal changes before replacements can be brought in. Failure to operate properly in such locations could cause the loss of as much as four to six months of data—possibly when it is needed most, as in predicting the path of a tsunami. Moreover, remotely located seismic and weather stations must operate equally well in very dry, very cold Arctic locations and in very wet and very hot jungle locations--without a regular human presence to tweak up performance for local extreme conditions.
The electronics in such equipment must withstand the challenges of extreme environmental and operational stresses. The electrical resistors, in particular, must operate uniformly and reliably in all extremes and despite all stresses. In all such applications, Vishay Foil Resistors have proven to be the most dependable in resistor technology on earth. With a very low temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) down to 0.05 ppm/°C ( 0 °C to 60 °C ), Bulk Metal® Foil resistors make electronic circuits virtually impervious to temperature-related changes.

At remotely operated stations, keeping power consumption low is an important consideration and Bulk Metal Foil resistors withstand the destructive etching of low DC power in high moisture atmospheres better than any other precision resistor technology. Additionally, the long-term load-life stability of Vishay Foil Resistors is better than any other type of resistor, with typical stability levels of 0.005% ( 50 ppm) delta-R after 10,000 hours of operation at full rated power and temperature. In locations such as inside the rim of active volcanoes or deep inside the earth as in oil-well data logging, foil resistors (which were specially designed for extreme environment and high temperature) withstand temperatures well above 220°C. No other resistor technology maintains its reliability and stability across the extremes of stress and operational life as well as Vishay Foil Resistors.
Three resistor technologies are widely used for precision resistors in weather applications: thin film, wirewound, and Bulk Metal Foil. Each has its own balance of characteristics and costs that justify its selection in these applications. Thin film resistors are the most cost-efficient within their normal range of characteristics but have the highest TCR, highest noise, and least stability of the three technologies. Wirewounds have low noise, low TCR, and a high level of stability at moderate cost but also have high impedance and a slow signal response. Wirewounds can also provide a higher power density, but some stability is lost through temperature cycling and load-life when made in smaller configurations.
Bulk Metal Foil resistors have the lowest noise, lowest TCR, highest stability and highest speed of any technology. With Bulk Metal Foil resistors, savvy designers often save overall by concentrating the circuit stability in the foil resistors, where exceptional stability allows for use of less-costly active devices---an option not available with other resistor technologies because foil requires a smaller total error budget through all cumulative resistor life exposures. Also, foil often eliminates extra circuitry that has been added merely for the purpose of correcting the limitations of other resistor components.
